Background

Avril Loveless is a lecturer in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education. She works with primary and secondary students and teachers on the BA (QTS), PGCE, and PDAS BA and MA programmes, including courses presented in collaboration with local education authorities.

Her particular interests focus on the digital arts in Primary schools and the ways in which teachers can be supported in their knowledge of the use of ICT in teaching and learning. She has a commitment to exploring ways in which children can be creators as well as consumers of information in order to develop literacies appropriate to the 'Information Age'. She has worked in collaboration with Lighthouse, the Brighton Media Centre, in a number of initiatives to promote the creative use of digital technologies.

Avril has a wide experience of working with students and teachers using ICT in the classroom. Before teaching at the University of Brighton, she taught in Primary schools in Surrey and Inner London. She was an advisory teacher and lecturer for IT in Primary schools with the Inner London Education Authority before lecturing in In-service and Initial Teacher Education at St Mary's College, Twickenham.

She is the Chair of the ITTE (Association for IT in Teacher Education) and Convenor of the BERA-NITE Special Interest Group  (British Educational Research Association- New Technologies in Education) and member of AACE (Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education). She has organised national conferences and research seminars, focusing on the use of ICT in education and has been a keynote speaker at a number of conferences in Europe and the US.

Avril was the research co-ordinator for the Access Project (1996-1998), developing Digital Creativity in Primary Schools and evaluated the 'Art on the Net' project co-ordinated by Lighthouse. She has been involved in a number of European projects and courses for promoting independent learning with the support of ICT. Her current research focuses on teachers' pedagogy with ICT and the evaluation of the the East Sussex Portables for Teachers Project.

She is a member of the Creating Spaces network which promotes the creative uses of new technologies.

Research Interests

Avril has an interest in the development of the use of ICT in Education, particularly in supporting teachers in the growth of their knowledge of the ways in which ICT has an impact on subjects, teaching and culture. She has a particular interest in the visual and media arts and the focus of her doctoral research is in the development of pedagogy with ICT . She has also done research with teacher mentors supporting students.

In 1996-9, she was the research co-ordinator for the Access Project, working with artist Terry Taylor, developing Digital Creativity and Visual Literacy in Primary Schools. This project was a collaboration between the University of Brighton, The Arts Council of England, South East Arts and Lighthouse, the Brighton Media Centre. Avril also evaluated 'Art on the Net', a project focused on the development of new audiences for creative work, based in 4 secondary schools working with artists using a range digital technologies in visual arts, sculpture, video and performance arts.  The work from these projects can be viewed in the young people's  section at the Lighthouse Web site
