Edvard Munch

Born in Norway in 1863, Munch pre-dates the advent of psychoanalysis. The main body of Munch's work depicts his own inner conflicts of the psyche, so famously symbolised in The Scream. Yet his later work developed into a sunlit, outward-looking optimism that concluded an essentially fulfilled and meaningful life.

"What is art? Art grows out of grief and joy, but mainly grief. It is born of peoples' lives."

"Just as Leonardo da Vinci studied human anatomy and dissected corpses, so I try to dissect souls."

"We do not pass away - the world passes away from us."
