J M W Turner

Born in London in 1775, Turner was a spectacularly gifted artist, skilled in both watercolour and oil painting. Some of his more expressive works - such as Steamboat and Rain, Steam and Speed - exhibit a remarkable freedom in the use of oil paint, way ahead of his contemporaries. In the latter painting, the train's firebox appears to be in front of the train, emphasising the excitement of the train's power as it thunders over the bridge.
