| See these needs as functions; e.g. it's like having a digestion
system - essential if we are to survive; we digest our own food;
similarly we do our own understanding, generate our own affection and construct
our own sense of identity.
We can see them as muscles of the mind; like taking a dog for a walk
in the park we let him off the leash and he runs; if we left him in the
dog house he would lose his sense of being himself; we can exercise our
needs and not shrivel up and perish, but survive.
So we speak of realising the potential
of our needs; this is a continuous and dynamic process, like digesting
our food even as we sleep. |
