We are born with these fundamental biological human needs
We develop as full human beings as we realise their potential.
If we ignore them we soon run out of steam, and credibility.

   subsistence, of course.
   security, protection
   affection
   to understand
   to participate, share
   to create
   to reflect
   a sense of identity
   freedom to choose .

See these needs as functions; e.g. it's like having a digestion system -  essential if we are to survive; we digest our own food; similarly we do our own understanding, generate our own affection and construct our own sense of identity.

We can see them as muscles of the mind; like taking a dog for a walk in the park we let him off the leash and he runs; if we left him in the dog house he would lose his sense of being himself; we can exercise our needs and not shrivel up and perish, but survive.

So we speak of realising the potential of our needs; this is a continuous and dynamic process, like digesting our food even as we sleep.

When we cannot cope we feel sore, inadequate; this impoverishment is qualified satisfaction of our needs
and reminds us to start to realise the latent resourcefulness of our needs.

Paradoxically our sore feelings
alert us to our impoverishment
and beg us make it good.
