Technical Surveillances

The fabrication of steel structures frequently involves an extensive regime of inspection and testing of the completed welds, often with full-time inspectors and non-destructive testing operatives. Many fabrication companies either sub-contract their non-destructive testing to independent test houses, or use formally qualified in-house inspection personnel. This enables a more cost-effective and efficient inspection regime to be adopted.

In this approach, the day-to-day inspection of the fabrication is carried out by the independent test house, or by the in-house inspection personnel, and the resident inspector is replaced by, typically, weekly or fortnightly Technical Surveillance visits, as appropriate to the project. The use of Technical Surveillances enables areas to be monitored which would require either additional visits by the Client, or which otherwise may not be included in the inspection programme. This includes :

  • Regular surveillances of fabrication, welding, painting and inspection operations, allowing the overall standard of workmanship to be assessed

  • Reviewing the effectiveness of the quality assurance and quality control systems. Documentation for inclusion in the project data dossier can be monitored and reviewed prior to final compilation of the dossier

  • Progress is monitored and expedited as necessary, and detailed reports can be provided

  • Technical support is available to site and office-based personnel from a qualified Welding Engineer
