ENGINE
MAIN
BODYWORK
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
One of
the reasons I purchased the car was because the engine appeared to be in
good condition.Unfortunately, a month after I purchased the car for £3000,
the left hand timing chain snapped. Upon stripping the engine, I discovered
several faults:
-
Snapped LH
timing chain
-
Blocked LH
chain tensioner oil supply
-
Broken camshaft
-
Damaged head
-
Bent inlet
valve
-
Stripped
gear on jackhaft and waterpump
Below is
a picture of the damaged Left Hand Head. It's a shame the head was ruined,
as the waterways have absolutely zero corrosion!
Below
shows the snapped LH camshaft! Snapped clean behind the front bearing!
Who says stag timing chains are weak? My Renold chain didn't let go until
it had taken the camshaft and head with it!!!
And the
damaged head. The front bearing is wrecked. One of the inlet valves has
been battered by the piston.
The head
is dead flat, and has perfect waterways. Maybe it's repairable?
All back
together now. It took a while. That air cleaner and rocker covers let the
side down though! A lick of paint required, but where do I get the greeny
grey for the air cleaner? And no, absolutely I refuse to paint it silver!
I have
pushed the camera to it's limits of zoom and focus here. The car hung onto
it's gears to about 4000 rpm even under very light throttle. A temporary
fix is to disconnect the kickdown linkage. It means that the car wants
to change up early, but I find that far less irritating than late.
The waterpump
gear, although blurred in this photo, was badly chewed, with blueing on
the gears. The jackshaft was similar.
