This website contains maps for all native orthopteroid insects recorded in Sussex. The orthopteroids include insects of the orders Orthoptera (grasshoppers, groundhoppers, crickets and bush-crickets), Dictyoptera (cockroaches) and Dermaptera (earwigs). More about this site. The importance of recording and mapping Orthoptera - 1. Conservation - Sussex is rich in orthopteroids, including eleven species listed as being Nationally Scarce, one species listed as Vulnerable and two species listed as Endangered. As well as being interesting in their own right, Orthoptera are valuable markers of species-rich habitats. Accurate recording and mapping can be used to guide land management for conservation purposes. 2. Indicators of changes in land use and climate - Despite the decline of some species, there is no doubt that at least two species of British Orthoptera have shown dramatic expansions in geographical distribution since the early 1980's. It seems likely that several other species also are spreading. It is important to monitor these changes. Orthoptera appear to be very sensitive to subtle changes in climate and land use.
