FREDERICK MARRYAT
b.1792 d.1848
Although he was known early in his writing career for adult novels, drawing on his experiences at sea, he is perhaps best remembered for his books for children, including Masterman Ready and Children of the New Forest. Marryat was also fascinated with Gothic horror and the result was Snarleyyow, or The Dog fiend (1836) and The Phantom Ship (1839). The werewolf episode from The Phantom Ship is sometimes reprinted as "The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains".
