Wood Recycling Project

Project Update

No. 1 February 1998

We're off!

The newly launched Brighton and Hove Wood Recycling Project is starting off with a bang! In the first two weeks of the Project's existence, Brighton & Hove Council have offered a site, and local construction company TJ Brabon and Son have donated over 600 spare doors. More details below.

What's it all about?

The Brighton and Hove Wood Recycling Project has been set up to reclaim the tonnes of timber currently needlessly burnt or land-filled. Most types of "waste" wood can be recycled or re-used and the project aims collect, sort, and sell the wood for a variety of uses. The long-term aim is to create a profitable " business" that is of genuine environmental benefit and whose profits are invested in the community through grants or loans to other local environmental projects.

Who's in charge?

The Project is being set up as a not-for-profit company, and is the creation of Brighton marketing consultant and environmental activist Richard Mehmed. He is currently working voluntarily on the Project with journalist and fellow green campaigner Matthew Ledbury. In time, a full-time manager and team will run the project.

What's happening?

Site

Brighton and Hove Council have kindly provided 300 square metres of land for the Project at the back of Stanmer Park - a wonderful location that should prove ideal for working. Thanks very much B & H Council!

Company Creation

Experienced Chartered Accountant Brain Ogilvy has offered to help formally set the Project up as a non-profit company. A Management Board is to be created of people with different skills (local business people, councillors, environmental experts and so on) who support the aims of the Project. Nominations are welcomed from anyone with appropriate experience keen to get involved.

Wood Donors

C Dugard Machine Tools Ltd. have got us off to a great start by pledging all their excess wood (many tonnes a year) to the Project. Several other companies have pledged to donate wood including TJ Brabon and Son Ltd. which has a contract to repair council houses in Crawley and Brighton and has offered us 642 old front doors!

Can you help us?

What we need now:

· A volunteer carpenter to help design and build sheds and play houses and other items to sell

· Hand and machine tools of all types

· Computer and other office equipment

· Money to help kick-start the project
