PIONEERING SITE COLLECTIONS STARTED - WITH A SPONSORED TRUCK
To kick start a unique timber collection service at their sites, local building companies Adenstar, Bramber Construction and Integra have kindly donated us a Transit pick-up truck.
The three green firms - committed to environmental best practise - are pioneering the separation of timber waste from general rubbish, which previously would have all gone into the skip. Now all timber, including off cuts, demolition waste and pallets, is held for us to collect. Already our sorting process enables almost 50% of the collected material to be reused, resulting in tonnes of timber being saved from landfill.
Big Body Shop Deal
Wood and pallets from the Body Shop?s H.Q will no longer go to waste. The company?s policy "everything that is recyclable is recycled" is brilliant. Now thanks to us WOOD can be put on the recyclables list. Regular collections have begun from the Littlehampton site.
Site no longer sore for eyes!
Slowly but surely the site is being sorted out. Wood stores have been constructed to keep the ever-increasing volumes of timber clean and dry. Many thanks to Chris Barrett, one of our artistic volunteers, for designing a highly practical and funky fence to enclose our site.
What We?re About
· The Brighton and Hove Wood Recycling Project has been set up to reclaim and re-use some of the 1000?s of tonnes of timber currently land-filled in the Brighton & Hove area every year.
· We aim to create a financially self - supporting voluntary body that is of genuine environmental and social benefit to the local community. Any "profit" will be given in grants and loans to other local environmental projects
Wood Grading Method
We have now developed a system to grade the arriving timber.
Grade 1: Timber that is good enough to sell back to builders/ the DIY market.
Grade 2: Shorter lengths of clean, sound timber. Useful for school CDT classes or for our own range of wood products.
Grade 3: Consists of
Compost - rotten, wormed or generally damp pieces are chipped and returned to the land to improve soil.
Fire wood & kindling - clean, dry, but un-mendable pallets can be taken apart & bagged for winter fuel. Wood burns cleaner than coal, releases less carbon dioxide and when supplied by us, is a cheap source of winter fuel.
Got an open fire - give us a call for prices and delivery times.
Contaminated - unfortunately
a proportion of the wood we receive has no practical use at present, because
it is too heavily covered in paint or preservatives (which may contain
nasties). Still, we are returning less than 30% of all the timber collected
back to the waste stream. A remarkable improvement.
STILL NEEDED!
Volunteers, including a carpenter to help design& build our range of wood products.
Donations: to help the project grow until we become financially self-sufficient.
